First, half worked, half carried weapons (15-20). It was hard enough work to rebuild the wall. Now they had to defend themselves from attack as well. Half the men worked while half protected them with weapons. They carried materials with one hand and a weapon in the other. Even the builders wore swords. One problem was that they were too few to make an army. So the trumpet sound would rally them together. They were ready to postpone building and fight at any moment. They believed God would fight for them.
Second, amazing dedication (21-23). They worked from sun up till sun down and even slept with their weapons. They were workers by day and guards by night. They worked with amazing diligence and dedication, giving themselves fully to the Lord's work.
Prayer: Lord, forgive my laziness and half-hearted service. Kindle in me a passion for your work and to work with your people for it.
One Word: The Lord will fight for his united, dedicated servants
