Zechariah 11:1-17 (ESV)
Key Verse: 11:9
First, I shepherded the flock (1-8a). God's judgment is depicted as ruined trees and thickets and destroyed pastures. Zechariah is told to shepherd the flock marked for slaughter. They are marked for slaughter because the Lord would give them up (6). Zechariah tenderly cares for the flock. His two staffs represent the covenant of grace and the union of Judah and Israel. He rids the land of three, bad shepherds. Zechariah's shepherding looks forward to the earthly ministry of Jesus Christ.
Second, the flock detested me (8b-17). Instead of being appreciative, the flock detests Zechariah. In weariness, he rejects the flock and allows them to perish. The staffs are broken. The shepherd is sent away for thirty silver coins. Jesus was rejected by his people and so God rejected them. Jesus was betrayed for thirty silver coins (Mt 27:9,10). The foolish shepherd is the anti-christ.
Prayer: Lord, help us not to be foolish sheep but to submit to and obey Jesus.
One Word: Do not reject Christ
Revelation 19:11-21
