Isaiah 9:1-7 (ESV)
Date: Dec. 22, 2014
Isaiah 9:1-7 (ESV)
Key Verse: 9:6
First, despised Galilee honored by God (1-5). After the invasion Assyria populated Galilee with Gentiles. God humbled them because of their idol worship, and they lived in gloom and deep darkness. But God planned to honor them by sending Jesus, the great light. His coming dispels all darkness, enlarges the nation, increases joy, and destroys the yolk of the oppressor, which is the power of sin and death.
Second, Jesus' humble coming as a child (6-7). A child intimidated no one. Yet the government would be on his shoulders. We welcome his reign because of who he is. Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. He is everything to everyone; in him we find all we need. His kingdom will be marked by justice and righteousness, love and peace.
Prayer: Father, thank you for giving us your Son. May his light and his reign bring joy, deliverance, and peace.
One Word: The zeal of the Lord will do it
