I Hate Divorce

Date: Dec. 28, 2014

Passage

Malachi 2:10-16  (ESV)

Daily Bread

Key Verse: 2:15

First, God's covenant (10-12). God's covenant with his people is like a marriage contract. God took Israel as his holy bride when he delivered her from Egypt. He was faithful to her in spite of her unfaithfulness. Israel desecrated the sanctuary of the Lord and became detestable.

Second, do not break faith with the wife of your youth (13-16). Marriage is a holy thing in the Lord. When Israel was unfaithful to God, that unfaithfulness infected their human relationships-even their marriages. God established marriage. It is such a holy relationship that the two become one. Why did God create marriage? It is because he seeks godly offspring. God hates divorce. Broken covenants, broken marriage vows and divorce are the result of degenerated spirits. So Malachi repeated, "So guard yourself in your spirit, and do not break faith..." God created covenant and marriage; he has power to heal the broken. It is up to us to guard what he has created in us, and be faithful to him who is so faithful to us.

Prayer: Lord, help me to guard myself in my spirit. Help me to keep my heart faithful to you.

One Word: Do not break faith
