Daily Bread

Jesus Defeated the Devil

Date: Jan. 30, 2015

Passage

Matthew 4:1-11  (ESV)

Daily Bread

Key Verse: 4:4

First, man shall not live on bread alone (1-4). Jesus was led by the Spirit to face Satan, who defeated all people with his tempting. After fasting 40 days, Jesus was hungry. Satan's temptation was related to finding life security and purpose in bread. Jesus' answer tells us that man's life is not found in filling his stomach. Rather, our life is found in God's word: our purpose, identity, lifestyle and value system. His promises are our sure security in an uncertain world.

Second, do not put your God to the test (5-7). Satan tempted Jesus to perform a miracle at the temple, winning the people by avoiding the cross. Jesus' answer tells us to trust God instead.

Third, worship and serve God alone (8-11). Lastly Satan offered Jesus the world, if Jesus would worship him. Money, power and worldly glory are idols to us. Jesus rebuked Satan, and taught us to worship and serve God alone. Jesus defeated Satan's temptations with the word of God.

Prayer: Father, thank you for Jesus my Savior, who defeated the devil. Help me live by your word.

One Word: live on every word of God
