Romans 1:18-32 (ESV)
Key Verse: 1:18
First, man's rebellion (18-23). The wrath of God is holy, righteous, just, and perfect. It has been going on ever since the Fall of Man in the Garden of Eden. God's wrath has come upon the godlessness and wickedness of people. "Godlessness" refers to our sinful attitude of irreverence towards God while "wickedness" describes our sinful activities towards each other. Our rebellion against God is deliberate; it is not due to ignorance, for "God's invisible qualities - his eternal power and divine nature - have been clearly seen in God's creation." Instead of glorifying God and giving thanks to Him, our minds became futile and our foolish hearts were darkened. We foolishly exchanged the glory of the immortal God for worthless idols of our own creation.
Second, the result (24-32). We suffer from personal and social chaos. Why? It is the wrath of God being revealed. He has given us over to our sinful desires, shameful lusts, and depraved minds. We got what we wanted! Although the penalty of such rebellion is death, we so often encourage others to join us.
Prayer: Father, forgive us and turn our hearts to Jesus.
One Word: We are sinners in need of a Savior
