God's Standard of Judgment

Date: Feb. 25, 2015

Passage

Romans 2:6-16  (ESV)

He will render to each one according to his works: to those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life; but for those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, there will be wrath and fury. There will be tribulation and distress for every human being who does evil, the Jew first and also the Greek, 10 but glory and honor and peace for everyone who does good, the Jew first and also the Greek. 11 For God shows no partiality.

12 For all who have sinned without the law will also perish without the law, and all who have sinned under the law will be judged by the law. 13 For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified. 14 For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. 15 They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them 16 on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus.

Key Verse: 2:6

He will render to each one according to his works:

First, the basis of judgment (6-11). The basis of God's judgment will be our works and our motives for doing them. To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, God will grant eternal life. But to those who do evil, there will be wrath and anger. Unfortunately, there is no one who seeks God and no one who is righteous (3:10-11). No one can claim any favoritism, for God's judgment is impartial and absolute.

Second, God's perfect standard (12-16). Both Jews and Gentiles will be held accountable on the Day of Judgment according to the truth that has been revealed to them. On that final day, only those who obey the law will be declared righteous. Without Christ, though, this is utterly hopeless. For no one has satisfied God's standard of perfect obedience to the law or even to the standard of our innate conscience. Nothing will remain hidden on that day for there are no secrets from God. And so, we are left with nowhere else to turn. We need Jesus.

Prayer: Father, lead us to the feet of Jesus our Savior.

One Word: God will repay each person

In Thessalonica and Berea

Acts 17:1-15

Key Verse: 17:11

Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.
