Romans 3:21-31 (ESV)
Key Verse: 3:21-22a
First, the righteousness of God (21-26). The law is powerless to save. All it can do is show us our sin. But now, a righteousness that was promised through the law and the prophets has been made known by God. The truth of this is clear and simple: "This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe." Notice how all the barriers have come down. The first to go was the barrier of sin that separated us from God. And then, the barrier between Jews and Gentiles was destroyed as well. There is no difference between Jews and Gentiles. Both were lost in sin and both have been justified freely by grace through the redemption that came by Christ. God did not merely overlook our sin; it was paid for by the shedding of Christ's blood on the cross. In this way, the justice of God has been completely satisfied and those who have faith in Jesus stand fully justified before God.
Second, the end of boasting (27-31). Boasting has now been excluded. Why? Because justification is not based on works, but on faith alone. In response to what Christ has done for us, we should be eager to uphold God's holy law.
Prayer: Father, thank you for the life-giving blood of Christ.
One Word: Righteousness is by faith alone
