Genesis 21:1-21 (ESV)
Key Verse: 21:12
First, Isaac the son of promise is born (1-7). God faithfully keeps his promises. God fulfilled his promise to Abraham and Sarah, granting them the promised son. They named him Isaac, which means "he laughs". God remembers all our prayers and answers them in his time. Ishmael might have seemed a blessing but he was not God's solution to their childless problem, Isaac was. We must wait upon the Lord until we see his word fulfilled and we can laugh like Sarah with tears of joy.
Second, send away the son of the slave woman (8-21). Ishmael was the fruit of Abraham's and Sarah's unbelief and impatience. His presence in Abraham's household was a threat to baby Isaac. At the weaning party of Isaac, Ishmael was mocking him so Sarah asked Abraham to send him and his mother away. This distressed Abraham but God used this event to protect Isaac, the covenant bearer. Only through Isaac would all nations be blessed. Have you sent away your Ishmael?
Prayer: Lord, help me to obey you by faith and not compromise with my human feelings.
One Word: Cast out your Ishmael!
Acts 8:26-40
