Mark 15:16-32 (ESV)
Key Verse: 15:31b
First, Jesus is mocked by soldiers (16-20). The Roman soldiers had sadistic fun with Jesus, mocking his kingship with a royal robe and a crown of thorns. They beat him on the head, spat on him and bowed in mock homage. Sinners mock truth and exalt human authority.
Second, they crucified him (21-26). They forced Simon from Cyrene, a passerby, to carry the cross. At Golgotha, Jesus refused myrrh-wine perhaps to take the pain and to keep a clear mind. They crucified Jesus at 9 a.m. They cast lots for his clothes. The charge read: THE KING OF THE JEWS. Jesus is indeed our eternal spiritual King.
Third, he saved others; he couldn't save himself (27-32). Jesus was mocked and insulted by passers-by, the chief priests, and those crucified with him. They all mocked him for saving others but not himself, for it is natural for all people to save themselves. Jesus did not save himself in order to save us. So he became our Savior eternally. This was his mission from God.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, eternal praises to you for taking the shame and pain of the cross to save us. Dwell in us with your spirit of humility, holiness and love.
One Word: Jesus is our Savior and King
