Romans 6:1-14 (ESV)
Key Verse: 6:11
So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.
First, our new life in Christ (1-10). True! God's abundant grace covers any sin a believer may commit. But should we keep on sinning? Verse 2 says, "We are those who have died to sin..." So, a believer who returns to his former patterns of sin is like a zombie trying to relive a depraved life that is dead and gone. When we indulge in our old sinful habits, we not only ignore our Lord's suffering and death, but our own participation in it. We have been baptized into Christ and are united with Him. When he died, so did we. However, we have also been united with him in life. Just as Christ was raised from the dead, we too have been granted a new life. Why would we ever go back?
Second, sin is no longer your master (11-14). When our old natures were crucified with Christ, we were set free from our horrible slavery to sin. Sin's reign in our lives is over! Therefore, having received the wonderful grace of God, we are to count ourselves dead to sin and alive in Christ. How? By offering ourselves to God instead of allowing sin to resume its reign in our lives. In fact, every part of our lives should be offered to God as an instrument of righteousness for His glory. God's grace has set us free from the rule of sin and we are to remain free.
Prayer: Father, your grace has freed us from the power of sin. Help us, now, to live for your glory.
One Word: Count yourselves as alive in Christ!
