Genesis 29:1-30 (ESV)
Key Verse: 29:20
So Jacob served seven years for Rachel, and they seemed to him but a few days because of the love he had for her.
First, Jacob encountered Rachel (1-14). By God's provision, Jacob arrived safely in Haran. His direction was to marry Laban's daughter. Immediately, he met Laban's daughter Rachel, who was a shepherdess. Jacob volunteered to water her sheep, then he kissed Rachel, and began to weep. Jacob was overwhelmed by God's leading--and Rachel's beauty. He introduced himself, and she ran to tell her father, who welcomed him.
Second, Laban tricked Jacob (15-30). After one month, Laban realized that Jacob was an able man, and offered him a job. Jacob only wanted Rachel, and offered seven years of labor as a bride price for her. Because of his unshakeable love for Rachel, it seemed like only a few days. (The Bible never exaggerates.) Laban made use of Jacob's weakness for Rachel, and on the wedding night, he deceived Jacob into marrying his older daughter, Leah. When Jacob confronted his uncle, Laban offered Rachel in exchange for seven more years of work. Jacob's vision was only for one woman, but God used this to lay the foundation for a great nation through Jacob.
Prayer: Lord, thank you for shepherding me and using me even though my vision is so small.
