Such Great Faith

Date: May. 12, 2015

Passage

Matthew 8:5-13  (ESV)

When he had entered Capernaum, a centurion came forward to him, appealing to him, “Lord, my servant is lying paralyzed at home, suffering terribly.” And he said to him, “I will come and heal him.” But the centurion replied, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof, but only say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I too am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. And I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes, and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” 10 When Jesus heard this, he marveled and said to those who followed him, “Truly, I tell you, with no one in Israel have I found such faith. 11 I tell you, many will come from east and west and recline at table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven, 12 while the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” 13 And to the centurion Jesus said, “Go; let it be done for you as you have believed.” And the servant was healed at that very moment.

Key Verse: 8:10b

When Jesus heard this, he marveled and said to those who followed him, “Truly, I tell you, with no one in Israel have I found such faith.

First, "just say the word" (5-9). Jesus met a unique centurion, who cared for his suffering servant and asked Jesus to heal him. Jesus was willing to go to the Gentile's house. But the centurion knew he didn't deserve such special treatment. As he heard the stories about Jesus, he came to believe Jesus has all authority, even over spirits and diseases. Based on his faith in Jesus' authority and his own experience in command, he said: "But just say the word, and my servant will be healed."

Second, Jesus praised his faith (10-13). Jesus was amazed by the centurion's faith in the authority of Jesus' word. Through this man's faith, Jesus saw many people from the east and west coming to the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. They had places there because they shared the faith of the patriarchs. Jesus warned the Jews that those subjects who did not have faith would be cast out from the kingdom. Jesus "said the word", and the man's servant was healed.

Prayer: Father, thank you for Jesus, who sees our faith. Please help me trust in Jesus' authority today.

One Word: Faith in the authority of Jesus' word
