Salvation for Those Who Believe

Date: Jun. 7, 2015

Passage

Romans 10:1-13  (ESV)

Daily Bread

Key Verse: 10:9

First, righteousness for everyone who believes (1-4). Paul's prayer for his fellow Jews was simply for them to be saved. The Jews were zealous for God, but zeal is not enough. They sought to establish their own righteousness by keeping all the religious laws and regulations, but this was another dead end. A self-created righteousness simply doesn't exist! The only righteousness we can claim is through a knowledge of Christ. Christ fulfilled the law with his life and satisfied its penalty through his death. In this way Christ is the culmination and end of the law. Righteousness is freely available for everyone who believes in him.

Second, the word is near you (5-13). According to Moses, righteousness can indeed be obtained through perfect obedience to the law. But this is infinitely beyond our reach. However, a righteousness by faith in Christ is very close indeed. "The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart." In fact, the promise of God is this: if you confess Jesus is Lord and believe that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. God has made his righteousness available to everyone - for the Jew and the Gentile alike. Everyone who calls on the name of Jesus will be saved.

Prayer: Father, thank you for our righteousness in Christ.

One Word: Righteousness is by faith alone
