Those Given a Trust

Date: Jun. 28, 2015

Passage

1 Corinthians 4:1-5  (ESV)

This is how one should regard us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found faithful. But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged by you or by any human court. In fact, I do not even judge myself. For I am not aware of anything against myself, but I am not thereby acquitted. It is the Lord who judges me. Therefore do not pronounce judgment before the time, before the Lord comes, who will bring to light the things now hidden in darkness and will disclose the purposes of the heart. Then each one will receive his commendation from God.

Key Verse: 4:1

This is how one should regard us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God.

First, those given a trust must prove faithful. (1-2) The Corinthian Christians treated their Bible teachers as if they were something to boast about. But they are servants of Christ who have been entrusted with the secret things of God. To them God revealed a mystery that was long hidden. He revealed himself in the gospel of Jesus-his cross and resurrection. Paul was one who received this revelation. He lived a life faithful to his calling. He lived as a steward of the things of God. He taught the believers in Corinth to regard him and all of the apostles as those given such a sacred trust.

Second, it is the Lord who judges me. (3-5) When the Corinthian believers boasted of the apostles, they were making judgments they couldn't make. It is the Lord who judges. Paul did not even judge himself. He entrusted even that judgment into the hands of the Lord. There is a time appointed for judgment, and there is one who judges justly, for he is holy. He judges rightly, exposing sin as sin, but also using the gospel as the measure. We are not called to judge, but to serve God's justice.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for revealing yourself to me in the gospel of Jesus. Help me to live as a servant of Christ, faithful to the trust you have given me.

One Word: Be faithful to your trust
