Matthew 22:23-33 (ESV)
Key Verse: 22:31b,32
First, a tragic story (23-28). The Sadducees did not believe in the resurrection or angels (Ac 23:8) and wanted to make Jesus' teaching about resurrection absurd. So they gave a made-up story about a woman who married seven brothers in succession and died. They asked him whose wife she would be at the resurrection. This reveals their darkness, emptiness and lifelessness now on earth as well as in the life to come.
Second, the God of the living (29-33). Jesus pointed out that they were in error by teaching the Scripture. First, there will be no marriage in heaven. Heaven will be incomparably beautiful beyond human marriage. Second, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob all died long years ago, but they are living with God. God is the God of the living.
Prayer: Lord, thank you for giving us a glimpse of heaven through Jesus. I shall also live with the living God!
One Word: God is the God of the living
Acts 8:26-40
Key Verse: 8:35
