Matthew 23:25-39 (ESV)
Key Verse: 23:37
First, the blood of the righteous (25-36). Jesus rebukes the Pharisees of their hypocrisy. They were like a clean cup or white-washed tombs-clean outside but full of corruption on the inside. They decorated the tombs of prophets of old times. Ironically, they were doing the same wickedness as those who shed the blood of the prophets, beginning from Abel, who was murdered by Cain, to Zechariah who was killed by King Josiah because he spoke against the idolatry (2 Ch 24:20-22). Jesus foresaw the religious leaders shedding the blood of the righteous. It is costly for one who stands on God's side.
Jesus, Jesus weeps (37-39). Jesus' heart is wide open to gather his flock like a hen gathers her chicks. He laments over his people when they reject his love. They will face the judgment when he returns as the Judge.
Prayer: Lord, I come under your wing. Help me to stand on the truth at any cost.
One Word: Jesus weeps
Acts 8:26-40
Key Verse: 8:35
