Jesus Calms the Storm

Date: Jan. 29, 2016

Passage

Mark 4:35-41  (ESV)

Daily Bread

Key Verse: 4:39

First, "...don't you care if we drown?" (35-38). The evening after he spoke the parables of the kingdom of God, Jesus and his disciples got into a boat to go to the other side of the lake. Jesus had been working hard and he was tired. He fell asleep in the boat. A bad storm suddenly came up over the lake-so severe the boat was nearly swamped. These experienced fishermen woke Jesus, worried they were about to drown. They asked him, "Teacher, don't you care if we drown?"

Second, Jesus rebuked the wind and waves (39-41). The disciples were afraid. But Jesus got up, rebuked the wind and the waves, and the storm immediately calmed. The disciples were afraid of this storm because they had no faith. When our faith flees from us, as it can when trials come, we can do nothing but be afraid. We can do nothing to calm the storms of our lives. Only Jesus can calm the storms in our lives. Afterward, the disciples asked the question, "Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!" The answer should be obvious. Jesus is God!

Prayer: Father, we have many storms in our lives. Without Jesus we can only drown. Help us to know that only Jesus calms the storms.

One Word: Jesus calms the storms of our lives
