God is My Rock and My Salvation

Date: Feb. 7, 2016

Passage

Psalm 62:1-12  (ESV)

To the choirmaster: according to Jeduthun. A Psalm of David.

  For God alone my soul waits in silence;
    from him comes my salvation.
  He alone is my rock and my salvation,
    my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken.
  How long will all of you attack a man
    to batter him,
    like a leaning wall, a tottering fence?
  They only plan to thrust him down from his high position.
    They take pleasure in falsehood.
  They bless with their mouths,
    but inwardly they curse. Selah
  For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence,
    for my hope is from him.
  He only is my rock and my salvation,
    my fortress; I shall not be shaken.
  On God rests my salvation and my glory;
    my mighty rock, my refuge is God.
  Trust in him at all times, O people;
    pour out your heart before him;
    God is a refuge for us. Selah
  Those of low estate are but a breath;
    those of high estate are a delusion;
  in the balances they go up;
    they are together lighter than a breath.
10   Put no trust in extortion;
    set no vain hopes on robbery;
    if riches increase, set not your heart on them.
11   Once God has spoken;
    twice have I heard this:
  that power belongs to God,
12     and that to you, O Lord, belongs steadfast love.
  For you will render to a man
    according to his work.

Key Verse: 62:1,2

To the choirmaster: according to Jeduthun. A Psalm of David.

  For God alone my soul waits in silence;
    from him comes my salvation.

First, rest for the restless soul (1-10). Rest for the restless soul can be found in God alone. Because David was a leader, he was the target of many attacks. People blessed him with their mouths and cursed him in their hearts. David learned that although he could not trust even those closest to him, God was a rock that could never be shaken. He found rest and salvation in God. Because he put his trust in God, he could say, "I will not be shaken." People spoke lies about him, so he learned to depend on God alone for honor. He found that lowborn men are but a breath and highborn men a lie. Even if they are weighed on a balance together, they are nothing. Riches cannot satisfy the heart nor do they give security to life.

Second, two things to know about God (11-12). God is strong and God is loving. So we can trust him. We can come to him and pour out our hearts. God is ready to help. God is able to help. He alone is our refuge.

Prayer: Prayer: Lord, I fix my heart on you, for you alone are my rock and my salvation.

One Word: In God alone I find rest
