Exodus 32:1-14 (ESV)
Key Verse: 32:14
First, the people made a golden calf (1-6). While Moses was with God, the people were impatient. They needed a visible god to go before them. Aaron should have stopped their evil attempt by helping them keep their absolute faith in God. Instead he yielded to their demand and made a golden calf. The people worshiped the idol. They ate and drank and indulged in wild partying like pagans.
Second, Moses' intercessory prayer (7-14). God's anger burned against the stiff-necked Israel. God wanted to destroy them and restart with Moses making him into a great nation. Moses was not interested in his personal gain. He was a good shepherd. He earnestly prayed as a mediator between God and the Israelites. His reasons were well based on God's promise and his love: He reminded them that they are God's people. God's fame was at stake. The Egyptians would laugh at God if God destroyed them after he led them out. He claimed God's promise to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob to make his descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky. The Lord then heard Moses' intercessory prayer with a life and death attitude and relented.
Prayer: Lord, help me not to make an idol out of impatience. Give me a sincere repentant heart claiming your promise in the blood of Jesus.
One Word: Our God relents
