Matthew 23:1-20 (ESV)
Key Verse: 23:6
First, "he is not here; he has risen" (1-15). At dawn on the first Easter, two Marys went to Jesus' tomb in sorrow. However, they were met by an angel who gave them the good news of his resurrection. Jesus was not in the tomb as Jesus told them many times while he was with them. They needed to be reminded of Jesus' word as they saw the empty tomb. Next, they were commanded to go and share this good news with his man disciples. On the way, the Risen Lord appeared to the women. What a surprise! The Lord told them to go and tell his brothers to go to Galilee where they would see the Risen Lord. Jesus is alive today. He alone gives joy and hope to all people.
Second, "go and make disciples" (16-20). Jesus met his disciples in Galilee. They worshipped him, but some still doubted. Nevertheless, Jesus commissioned his disciples to go and make disciples of all nations. The disciples of Jesus are those who obey Jesus and teach others to do the same. The mission was too great for the disciples, but Jesus' promise would enable them to do so. "And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." (30b)
Prayer: Lord, praise you who defeated the power of death. May the risen Lord make me an obedient disciple and disciple-maker.
One Word: He is not here; he has risen!
