Jesus Teaches About His Death

Date: Apr. 6, 2016

Passage

Mark 9:30-41  (ESV)

30 They went on from there and passed through Galilee. And he did not want anyone to know, 31 for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, “The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him. And when he is killed, after three days he will rise.” 32 But they did not understand the saying, and were afraid to ask him.

33 And they came to Capernaum. And when he was in the house he asked them, “What were you discussing on the way?” 34 But they kept silent, for on the way they had argued with one another about who was the greatest. 35 And he sat down and called the twelve. And he said to them, “If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.” 36 And he took a child and put him in the midst of them, and taking him in his arms, he said to them, 37 “Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me, receives not me but him who sent me.”

38 John said to him, “Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because he was not following us.” 39 But Jesus said, “Do not stop him, for no one who does a mighty work in my name will be able soon afterward to speak evil of me. 40 For the one who is not against us is for us. 41 For truly, I say to you, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to Christ will by no means lose his reward.

Key Verse: 9:37

“Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me, receives not me but him who sent me.”

First, the servant of all (30-37). Jesus took the chance to teach his disciples away from the crowds and excitement. He continued to teach them the gospel of the Son of Man who would suffer, be killed and then rise. Still the disciples did not understand. Instead they began to argue about who was the greatest among them. Jesus taught them that to be first, they must learn to serve. This is the reality of the kingdom of God. He took a child in his arms and taught them how to welcome such children in his name. We learn to see others not as competition for number one, but as God's precious children, purchased by the death of Jesus for their sins.

Second, whoever is not against us is for us (38-41). John was concerned about someone driving out demons in the name of Jesus because "he was not one of us." Jesus taught John to see others in light of the Messiah. He came and died so that all people may belong to the Messiah. He teaches us to discern his gospel whenever we see others. He came so that we may belong to him.

Prayer: Prayer: Lord, help me serve others in light of Jesus, as children belonging to him.

One Word: Welcome others in Jesus' name

Countless Saved from God’s Wrath by the Blood of the Lamb

Revelation 7:1-17

Key Verse: 7:9-10

A Great Multitude from Every Nation

After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, and crying out with a loud voice, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!”
