It is Good to Praise the Lord

Date: Jun. 6, 2016

Passage

Psalm 92:1-15  (ESV)

A Psalm. A Song for the Sabbath.

  It is good to give thanks to the LORD,
    to sing praises to your name, O Most High;
  to declare your steadfast love in the morning,
    and your faithfulness by night,
  to the music of the lute and the harp,
    to the melody of the lyre.
  For you, O LORD, have made me glad by your work;
    at the works of your hands I sing for joy.
  How great are your works, O LORD!
    Your thoughts are very deep!
  The stupid man cannot know;
    the fool cannot understand this:
  that though the wicked sprout like grass
    and all evildoers flourish,
  they are doomed to destruction forever;
    but you, O LORD, are on high forever.
  For behold, your enemies, O LORD,
    for behold, your enemies shall perish;
    all evildoers shall be scattered.
10   But you have exalted my horn like that of the wild ox;
    you have poured over me fresh oil.
11   My eyes have seen the downfall of my enemies;
    my ears have heard the doom of my evil assailants.
12   The righteous flourish like the palm tree
    and grow like a cedar in Lebanon.
13   They are planted in the house of the LORD;
    they flourish in the courts of our God.
14   They still bear fruit in old age;
    they are ever full of sap and green,
15   to declare that the LORD is upright;
    he is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him.

Key Verse: 92:1

A Psalm. A Song for the Sabbath.

  It is good to give thanks to the LORD,
    to sing praises to your name, O Most High;

First, "make music proclaiming your love" (1-8). This is a song written for Sabbath worship. True rest is found in praising the Lord. The content of our music is proclaiming His love and faithfulness, day and night. His deeds make us glad; we sing for joy over his great works and profound thoughts. Senseless and wicked people do not endure, but the Lord is forever exalted. It is good to praise the Lord!

Second, "the righteous will flourish" (9-15). While enemies perish and are scattered, those who worship the Lord are exalted. The righteous flourish, planted in the house of the Lord. Even in old age, we stay fresh and green, proclaiming, "The Lord is upright; he is my Rock, and there is no wickedness in him." To worship him this way every week keeps the righteous young and vibrant, joyful and glad. Let us worship him with song and proclaim his love and faithfulness all our lives!

Prayer: Father, thank you for giving us music, to sing your praise. Let me rejoice in all your deeds.

One Word: I sing for joy at what you have done

Take Words with You

Hosea 14:1-9

Key Verse: 14:2

  Take with you words
    and return to the LORD;
  say to him,
    “Take away all iniquity;
  accept what is good,
    and we will pay with bulls
    the vows of our lips.
