Give Thanks to the Lord for He is Good

Date: Aug. 7, 2016

Passage

Psalm 107:1-22  (ESV)

  Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good,
    for his steadfast love endures forever!
  Let the redeemed of the LORD say so,
    whom he has redeemed from trouble
  and gathered in from the lands,
    from the east and from the west,
    from the north and from the south.
  Some wandered in desert wastes,
    finding no way to a city to dwell in;
  hungry and thirsty,
    their soul fainted within them.
  Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble,
    and he delivered them from their distress.
  He led them by a straight way
    till they reached a city to dwell in.
  Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love,
    for his wondrous works to the children of man!
  For he satisfies the longing soul,
    and the hungry soul he fills with good things.
10   Some sat in darkness and in the shadow of death,
    prisoners in affliction and in irons,
11   for they had rebelled against the words of God,
    and spurned the counsel of the Most High.
12   So he bowed their hearts down with hard labor;
    they fell down, with none to help.
13   Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble,
    and he delivered them from their distress.
14   He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death,
    and burst their bonds apart.
15   Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love,
    for his wondrous works to the children of man!
16   For he shatters the doors of bronze
    and cuts in two the bars of iron.
17   Some were fools through their sinful ways,
    and because of their iniquities suffered affliction;
18   they loathed any kind of food,
    and they drew near to the gates of death.
19   Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble,
    and he delivered them from their distress.
20   He sent out his word and healed them,
    and delivered them from their destruction.
21   Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love,
    for his wondrous works to the children of man!
22   And let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving,
    and tell of his deeds in songs of joy!

Key Verse: 107:1

  Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good,
    for his steadfast love endures forever!

First, give thanks for God's unfailing love (1-3). This is the first of the 44 thanksgiving poems in Book V. The psalmist urges the redeemed to give thanks to God and to tell their story. For the Lord redeemed Israel from the hands of the foe, especially Babylon. He gathered them from all corners of the lands. The Lord is good. His love endures forever!

Second, give thanks for his wonderful deeds (4-22). Here the psalmist well illustrates how much they were wandering in desert wastelands, suffering in utter darkness in iron chains and became fools in affliction because of their iniquities (4,10,17). Yet in their troubles when they cried out to the Lord, God saved and delivered them from each of their distresses (6b,13b,19b). Therefore the redeemed should give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds (8,15,21). Yes, we sinned endlessly causing God's faire judgment for our sins. Yet God heard and saved whenever we cried out to the Lord. Especially God sent his one and only Son to save us from our sin, death and Satan. Praise the Lord!

Prayer: Lord, we give thanks to you for your unfailing love and your wonderful forgiveness for our sins by sending Jesus!

One Word: Your love endures forever
