The Fear of the Lord is the Beginning of Wisdom

Date: Aug. 12, 2016

Passage

Psalm 111:1-10  (ESV)

  Praise the LORD!
  I will give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart,
    in the company of the upright, in the congregation.
  Great are the works of the LORD,
    studied by all who delight in them.
  Full of splendor and majesty is his work,
    and his righteousness endures forever.
  He has caused his wondrous works to be remembered;
    the LORD is gracious and merciful.
  He provides food for those who fear him;
    he remembers his covenant forever.
  He has shown his people the power of his works,
    in giving them the inheritance of the nations.
  The works of his hands are faithful and just;
    all his precepts are trustworthy;
  they are established forever and ever,
    to be performed with faithfulness and uprightness.
  He sent redemption to his people;
    he has commanded his covenant forever.
    Holy and awesome is his name!
10   The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom;
    all those who practice it have a good understanding.
    His praise endures forever!

Key Verse: 111:10

  The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom;
    all those who practice it have a good understanding.
    His praise endures forever!

First, he provides food (1-5). Let us extol our Lord with all our heart. For when we ponder, we see that great are the works of the Lord and glorious and majestic are his deeds. God is gracious and compassionate. He provides food for those who fear him. He remembers his covenant forever.

Second, he provides redemption (6-10). God has shown his people the power of his works. He gave them the land of other nations. All his precepts are trustworthy, steadfast forever and ever. According to his promises he provided redemption for his people, through Jesus' death on the cross. Holy and awesome is his name. To fear God is the beginning of wisdom. All who follow his word have good understanding. To God belongs eternal praise.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for sending Jesus to save us from our sins according to your covenant. Help me fear God only.

One Word: Praise the Lord!
