Didn't You Know I Had to Be in My Father's House?

Date: Sep. 27, 2016

Passage

Luke 2:41-52  (ESV)

Daily Bread

Key Verse: 2:49

First, Jesus stays behind in the temple (41-47). Although his parents set out to return to Nazareth, Jesus lingered in the temple talking with the teachers of the law. He was listening to them and asking them questions (46). And they all marveled at this unusual child (47). Those who listen and ask questions can be lifelong learners.

Second, why were you searching for me? (48-51). When they discovered him missing, his parents returned to Jerusalem and after three days found Jesus in the temple. When they asked him about his behavior, Jesus innocently replied, "Why were you searching for me? Didn't you know I had to be in my Father's house? (49) Already at age twelve the boy Jesus knew God as his Father and was full of spiritual desire. But he was also obedient to his parents and returned to Nazareth with them (51).

Third, Jesus grew in wisdom and stature (52). Although Jesus was divine, he had to grow up just like any other child. He grew in four areas: wisdom, stature (physical growth), in favor with God (spiritual growth) and in favor with man (social life).

Prayer: Lord, thank you for the wonderful example of the boy Jesus. Help me to grow in all key areas of life.

One Word: Listen and ask questions
