I Wait for the Lord

Date: Dec. 2, 2016

Passage

Psalm 130:1-131:3  (ESV)

A Song of Ascents.

  Out of the depths I cry to you, O LORD!
    O Lord, hear my voice!
  Let your ears be attentive
    to the voice of my pleas for mercy!
  If you, O LORD, should mark iniquities,
    O Lord, who could stand?
  But with you there is forgiveness,
    that you may be feared.
  I wait for the LORD, my soul waits,
    and in his word I hope;
  my soul waits for the Lord
    more than watchmen for the morning,
    more than watchmen for the morning.
  O Israel, hope in the LORD!
    For with the LORD there is steadfast love,
    and with him is plentiful redemption.
  And he will redeem Israel
    from all his iniquities.

A Song of Ascents. Of David.

  O LORD, my heart is not lifted up;
    my eyes are not raised too high;
  I do not occupy myself with things
    too great and too marvelous for me.
  But I have calmed and quieted my soul,
    like a weaned child with its mother;
    like a weaned child is my soul within me.
  O Israel, hope in the LORD
    from this time forth and forevermore.

Key Verse: 130:5

  I wait for the LORD, my soul waits,
    and in his word I hope;

First, out of the depths (1-8). There are times we reach our limits. We become depressed. Perhaps such suffering comes from external events beyond our control; perhaps from our own failures or shortcomings. But whatever the cause, it is the time for the child of God to cry out to the Father for mercy and come to him as a repentant sinner. God always hears us when we ask for mercy, for he is eager to forgive the repentant sinner. His forgiveness brings healing to the heart and soul. God's word of promise plants hope in people's hearts. Promises look to the future, and God's promises are as trustworthy as God's own faithful character. When my soul waits for the Lord and I put my hope in his word, he works in me mightily. With him is full redemption. He himself redeems his people from sin and despair.

Second, like a weaned child (131:1-3). When we are humble, we can let go of conceit and ambition. We are like a weaned who is peaceful and content. God wants us to surrender our pride and passion and put our hope in him. He wants to give us his deep peace and to teach us to enjoy fellowship with him.

Prayer: I cry to you from the depths, and my soul waits on you. I put my hope in you.

One Word: I wait upon the Lord
