Blessed is One Who Does Not Fall Away

Date: Jan. 19, 2017

Passage

Luke 7:18-23  (ESV)

18 The disciples of John reported all these things to him. And John, 19 calling two of his disciples to him, sent them to the Lord, saying, “Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?” 20 And when the men had come to him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to you, saying, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?’” 21 In that hour he healed many people of diseases and plagues and evil spirits, and on many who were blind he bestowed sight. 22 And he answered them, “Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor have good news preached to them. 23 And blessed is the one who is not offended by me.”

Key Verse: 7:23

And blessed is the one who is not offended by me.”

1. "Are you the one who is to come?" (18-20)

Jesus and his disciples went from town to town, and Jesus healed many sick and even raised a dead young man. Some of John the Baptist's disciples told John about the things they heard Jesus had been doing. John recognized Jesus back when he had baptized him. He knew Jesus was the one. He knew that Jesus would be the one who would baptize with the Holy Spirit. John wanted his disciples to learn the truth of Jesus from Jesus himself. So John sent them to Jesus to ask, "Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?" John's disciples obeyed and went to Jesus.

2. "Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me" (21-23)

Jesus answered John's question. "The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor." Who could do these things but the one who was to come? Only the Messiah can heal us of diseases and raise the dead! Jesus concluded, "Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me." When we believe Jesus is the one who does these things, we are blessed.

Prayer: Lord, help us not to stumble. Help us to hold on to you and your word, for only you give life.

One Word: Don't stumble
