Daily Bread

The Goal of This Command is Love

Date: Apr. 20, 2017

Passage

1Timothy 1:1-11  (ESV)

Daily Bread

Introduction to 1 Timothy

Key Verse: 1:5

1. Stop the teaching of false doctrines (1-7)

Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the command of God our Savior, wrote this letter to Timothy, his true son in the faith. Timothy was told to stay in Ephesus to command those teaching false doctrines to stop. Their influence was producing controversies instead of advancing God's work. They wanted to teach the law, but didn't know what they were talking about. Paul made clear that the purpose of this command is to promote love. Such a loving community is possible when individuals are growing in a pure heart, a good conscience and a sincere faith.

2. Purpose of the law (8-11)

Those who have faith in the gospel know the law is good. The law has two purposes: In verses 9-10a the law condemns destructive behavior and lifestyles, leading individuals to know they are sinners. At the same time, the law points to the gospel of salvation in Jesus Christ.

Prayer: Father, thank you for the law. Grant me a pure heart, good conscience and sincere faith.
