Remember Jesus Christ

Date: Jun. 27, 2017

Passage

2 Timothy 2:1-13  (ESV)

You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus, and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also. Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No soldier gets entangled in civilian pursuits, since his aim is to please the one who enlisted him. An athlete is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules. It is the hard-working farmer who ought to have the first share of the crops. Think over what I say, for the Lord will give you understanding in everything.

Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, the offspring of David, as preached in my gospel, for which I am suffering, bound with chains as a criminal. But the word of God is not bound! 10 Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. 11 The saying is trustworthy, for:

  If we have died with him, we will also live with him;
12   if we endure, we will also reign with him;
  if we deny him, he also will deny us;
13   if we are faithless, he remains faithful—

for he cannot deny himself.

Key Verse: 2:8

Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, the offspring of David, as preached in my gospel,

1. Be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus (1-7)

Paul encouraged Timothy to be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. What does this mean? Paul used three examples to help Timothy. Good soldiers must endure many hardships. They must also seek to please their commanding officer only (suffer for the gospel and please God). Athletes win only when they compete by the rules (take the word of God to heart and obey it). And farmers should be the first to receive a share of the crops (bear fruit to God). When God's servants diligently do His work, we are rewarded with the joy of seeing the gospel take root and grow in others. We see many lives changed through the work of the gospel.

2. God's work is not chained (8-13)

To Paul, being strong in the grace in Christ Jesus meant suffering for the sake of the gospel. Paul was in chains, but God's word is never chained! So Paul endured all so that the elect may obtain salvation in Christ Jesus.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for the grace in Christ Jesus. Thank you that through him, we are saved. Help us to remember Jesus Christ.
