The Lord Has a Day of Vengeance

Date: Dec. 16, 2017

Passage

Isaiah 34:1-17  (ESV)

Daily Bread

Key Verse: 34:8

1. the LORD is angry with all nations (1-4)

Inviting all nations to listen, Isaiah proclaims the Lord's wrath on all their armies. The Lord has a day of judgment planned for all nations on earth- none will be exempted; all will be swept away. This final judgment will include heaven and earth. After that there will be only one nation: the kingdom of God.

2. To uphold Zion's cause (5-17)

As the LORD judged spiritual forces he will judge the earth. In these verses, Edom is chosen as a representative enemy of God's people. They opposed Israel and rejoiced at the fall of Jerusalem, but their day would come (La 4:21-22). God's wrath is expressed using sacrificial language, showing the slaughter is God's righteous judgment on sin. Only the blood of Jesus is a refuge. God will uphold the cause of his people, turning Edom into a wilderness where wild animals dwell. His mouth has given the order, so will it be done.

Prayer: Father, your righteous wrath is coming. I cling to the blood of Jesus as refuge, and trust in your holy promise to your people and kingdom.

One Word: God's righteous judgment is coming
