Fellowship with the Father, Son and Each Other

Date: Jun. 22, 2018

Passage

1 John 1:1-10 (ESV)

That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life—the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us—that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. And we are writing these things so that our joy may be complete.

This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

Introduction to 1 John (the Fellowship of the Kingdom People)

Key Verse: 1:3

that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ.

1. Jesus, the word of life (1-4)

John saw Jesus, heard him, touched his pierced side and believed that he is the Word of life, the eternal life who was with God in the beginning. Jesus is God. This Jesus came into the world. Why? John proclaims that Jesus came to restore our broken fellowship with God and with each other. It was to give us complete joy.

2. Confess your sins (5-10)

God is light. In God there is no darkness. If one claims to have fellowship with God, but walks in darkness claiming to be without sin, he lies. He has no light. The light reveals we are all sinners without exception. So we must confess our sins. Then God is faithful and just. He will forgive all our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. Then we can have beautiful fellowship with God and with Jesus and with others as forgiven sinners walking in the light.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for Jesus who came and died so that we can have fellowship with God and with each other. Help me to confess my sins and walk in the light.

One Word: Jesus, the word of life and light!
