2 Samuel 11:1-13 (ESV)
Key Verse: 11:1
1 In the spring of the year, the time when kings go out to battle, David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel. And they ravaged the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah. But David remained at Jerusalem.
1. David forgot his mission and was tempted (1-5)
In the spring, at the time when kings go off to war, David sent Joab out with whole Israelite army while he stayed in the palace. He forgot his mission completely. When he lost his mission to lead the nation, Satan put sinful desires in his heart. Even though he knew Bathsheba was the wife of Uriah, his faithful general who was fighting on the battlefield, his sinful desires swallowed him. He could not help but be consumed by lust. Finally, he slept with her, and he forgot about it. Then, she sent word that she was pregnant. His sin could not be forgotten.
2. David tried to hide his sin (6-13)
When David heard Bathsheba was pregnant, he did not repent his adultery and take responsibility. He tried to cover up his sin by inviting General Uriah back from the battlefield, making him drunk, and sending him home to sleep with his wife. But his scheme failed since Uriah the Hittite was mission-centered. No one -- even the king -- can cover up his sin in front of God.
Prayer: Lord, help me to be faithful to my mission and repent sinful desires.
One Word: Keep my mission and overcome sinful desire
