The Resurrection of Christ is True!

Date: Apr. 24, 2019

Passage

1 Corinthians 15:1-11 (ESV)

Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain.

For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me. For I am the least of the apostles, unworthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me. 11 Whether then it was I or they, so we preach and so you believed.

1. Reminder about the gospel (1-8)

Paul begins this breathtaking section of his letter by taking the Corinthians back to the basics of the gospel. Everyone agreed to these essential facts: "that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures..." One evidence of the gospel's truth was the Corinthian church itself. They received the gospel, took their stand upon it, and were being saved by it. They knew that Christ was alive. He was living in their community! The evidence for the resurrection went far beyond the Corinthian church, however. The resurrected Christ appeared to a wide variety of witnesses at different times and places. The good news of the Lord's resurrection was true.

2. Paul's testimony (9-11)

The truth of the resurrection had an amazing effect on Paul's life. The moment he met the resurrected Christ, his life was completely changed. He went from terrorizing believers and persecuting the church to sacrificing his own life for it. By the grace of God he was saved, appointed, and empowered to do God's work. The resurrection of Christ changes every aspect of our lives by giving us a new hope and spirit. By this gospel we have been saved.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, remind us continually of the good news of your death and resurrection.

One Word: Remember the gospel!
