1. David the shepherd king of Israel (1-3).

After Saul's death, all of the people came to David at Hebron, remembering two things: It was David who led Israel on the military campaigns. And God had chosen David to be their shepherd and ruler. On the basis of David's character and actions as their shepherd, all the elders of Israel received him as their King. David made a covenant with them before the Lord. As God had promised through Samuel, God raised boy David into a shepherd king.

2. David captured the fortress of Zion (4-9)

Jerusalem was a stronghold of a tribe of Canaan in the land, enduring all these generations. They were confident no one could defeat them. But David and Joab did so. David moved the capital from Hebron to Jerusalem, the hill of Zion, and it became the City of David. The LORD Almighty was with David and he became more and more powerful.

Prayer: Father, you are a shepherd who raises shepherds. Help me to serve your people as a shepherd like David and my Lord Jesus.
