The Life-giving Gospel

Date: Apr. 7, 2020

Passage

1 Corinthians 15:1-11 (ESV)

Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain.

For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me. For I am the least of the apostles, unworthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me. 11 Whether then it was I or they, so we preach and so you believed.

Key Verse: 15:3-4

For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,

1. The gospel (1-4)

Gospel means good news. Jesus Christ is the gospel. As Adam's descendants, we must die because of our sins. Then we have a second death in hell. But Jesus died on the cross to forgive all our sins. His resurrection means that we will also be raised from the dead. Whoever believes in Jesus is saved and will be raised from the dead into the Kingdom of God. This is truly good news that we must believe and preach as of first importance.

2. Witnesses of the resurrection (5-11)

This gospel is not a man-made story. The suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus are predicted by the Scriptures. These events are historical facts. There are many eyewitnesses to this event: Peter, 12 disciples, 500 of brothers and Paul himself. Furthermore, their changed lives, from coward to courageous martyrs, from selfish to sacrificial and God-centered men testify to Jesus' resurrection.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for changing me when I received and took my stand on Jesus' death and resurrection. Help me pass this gospel on to others.

One Word: Pass on Jesus' gospel as of first importance!
