God’s Indescribable Gift

Date: Nov. 30, 2021

Passage

2 Corinthians 9:1-15 (ESV)

Now it is superfluous for me to write to you about the ministry for the saints, for I know your readiness, of which I boast about you to the people of Macedonia, saying that Achaia has been ready since last year. And your zeal has stirred up most of them. But I am sending the brothers so that our boasting about you may not prove empty in this matter, so that you may be ready, as I said you would be. Otherwise, if some Macedonians come with me and find that you are not ready, we would be humiliated—to say nothing of you—for being so confident. So I thought it necessary to urge the brothers to go on ahead to you and arrange in advance for the gift you have promised, so that it may be ready as a willing gift, not as an exaction.

The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work. As it is written,

  “He has distributed freely, he has given to the poor;
    his righteousness endures forever.”

10 He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness. 11 You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God. 12 For the ministry of this service is not only supplying the needs of the saints but is also overflowing in many thanksgivings to God. 13 By their approval of this service, they will glorify God because of your submission that comes from your confession of the gospel of Christ, and the generosity of your contribution for them and for all others, 14 while they long for you and pray for you, because of the surpassing grace of God upon you. 15 Thanks be to God for his inexpressible gift!

Key Verse: 9:15

Thanks be to God for his inexpressible gift!

Paul sent the brothers to the Corinthian churches in advance to prepare their pledged offering. For he wanted their offering to be a generous gift willingly given, not as one grudgingly given. He reminds them of the harvest principles (6) to encourage generous offering. Our offering is an expression of our faith in God, the source of all our blessings. It must be decided prayerfully, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. When we give in this spirit, God will bless us to meet all our needs in all things at all times so that we will have more opportunities to do good and to share more generously with others. Otherwise, we become like a rich fool (Lk 12:20).

Our giving is more than supplying the needs of others. It results in praise and thanksgiving to God, for our offering is our expression of our deep thanks to God for his surpassing grace. When we give generously, remembering God’s indescribable gift to us, those who receive it will praise God not only for our generosity in sharing with them, but for our obedient life, consistent with the gospel of Christ we confess. God gave his Son to die for us. It is his indescribable gift, which cannot be compared with anything we can give to others. Thanks be to God!

Prayer: Prayer: Lord, thank you for your indescribable gift, Jesus Christ who died for my sins. Help me to give to others generously and joyfully with a heart full of thanksgiving

Countless Saved from God’s Wrath by the Blood of the Lamb

Revelation 7:1-17

Key Verse: 7:9-10

A Great Multitude from Every Nation

After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, and crying out with a loud voice, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!”
