God’s Love and Faithfulness

Date: Jan. 27, 2022

Passage

Psalm 89:1-18 (ESV)

A Maskil of Ethan the Ezrahite.

  I will sing of the steadfast love of the LORD forever;
    with my mouth I will make known your faithfulness to all generations.
  For I said, “Steadfast love will be built up forever;
    in the heavens you will establish your faithfulness.”
  You have said, “I have made a covenant with my chosen one;
    I have sworn to David my servant:
  ‘I will establish your offspring forever,
    and build your throne for all generations.’” Selah
  Let the heavens praise your wonders, O LORD,
    your faithfulness in the assembly of the holy ones!
  For who in the skies can be compared to the LORD?
    Who among the heavenly beings is like the LORD,
  a God greatly to be feared in the council of the holy ones,
    and awesome above all who are around him?
  O LORD God of hosts,
    who is mighty as you are, O LORD,
    with your faithfulness all around you?
  You rule the raging of the sea;
    when its waves rise, you still them.
10   You crushed Rahab like a carcass;
    you scattered your enemies with your mighty arm.
11   The heavens are yours; the earth also is yours;
    the world and all that is in it, you have founded them.
12   The north and the south, you have created them;
    Tabor and Hermon joyously praise your name.
13   You have a mighty arm;
    strong is your hand, high your right hand.
14   Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne;
    steadfast love and faithfulness go before you.
15   Blessed are the people who know the festal shout,
    who walk, O LORD, in the light of your face,
16   who exult in your name all the day
    and in your righteousness are exalted.
17   For you are the glory of their strength;
    by your favor our horn is exalted.
18   For our shield belongs to the LORD,
    our king to the Holy One of Israel.

Key Verse: 89:1

A Maskil of Ethan the Ezrahite.

  I will sing of the steadfast love of the LORD forever;
    with my mouth I will make known your faithfulness to all generations.

How much do you trust the promises of others? Most likely, whether or not you believe someone’s promise depends on both their character and their ability to fulfill whatever it was they promised. So then, what about the promises of God? Can we believe them and trust him to fulfill them? The Psalmist reminds us of a promise that God had made to David. God said, “I will establish your line forever and make your throne firm through all generations.” Can we trust such an amazing promise? Forever is a long time! Even so, we can trust his promises by remembering the greatness of his love, his faithfulness, and his power.

Among all the heavenly beings, there is none like our God. The heavens declare his wonders and his faithfulness. The psalmist declares, “In the council of the holy ones God is greatly feared; he is more awesome than all who surround him.” All creation reveals his mighty power. He is able to calm the raging seas, deliver his people from bondage, and scatter their enemies. Righteousness, justice, love and faithfulness - these are but a few of his many attributes. Clearly, our God has both the character and the power to fulfill every single one of his promises. The person who knows God and trusts in him is blessed and full of joy.

Prayer: Prayer: Father, we rejoice in all your wonderful promises. Our trust is in you alone.

One Word: One Word: God’s love and faithfulness are forever

The Lord’s Passover

Exodus 12:1-28

Key Verse: 12:23

For the LORD will pass through to strike the Egyptians, and when he sees the blood on the lintel and on the two doorposts, the LORD will pass over the door and will not allow the destroyer to enter your houses to strike you.
