Let the Redeemed Tell Their Story

Date: Jun. 22, 2022

Passage

Psalm 107:1-16 (ESV)

Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good,
for his steadfast love endures forever!
Let the redeemed of the LORD say so,
whom he has redeemed from trouble
and gathered in from the lands,
from the east and from the west,
from the north and from the south.
  Some wandered in desert wastes,
    finding no way to a city to dwell in;
  hungry and thirsty,
    their soul fainted within them.
Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble,
and he delivered them from their distress.
He led them by a straight way
till they reached a city to dwell in.
Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love,
for his wondrous works to the children of man!
For he satisfies the longing soul,
and the hungry soul he fills with good things.
10   Some sat in darkness and in the shadow of death,
prisoners in affliction and in irons,
11   for they had rebelled against the words of God,
and spurned the counsel of the Most High.
12   So he bowed their hearts down with hard labor;
they fell down, with none to help.
13   Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble,
and he delivered them from their distress.
14   He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death,
    and burst their bonds apart.
15   Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love,
for his wondrous works to the children of man!
16   For he shatters the doors of bronze
and cuts in two the bars of iron.

Key Verse: 107:2

Let the redeemed of the LORD say so,
whom he has redeemed from trouble

This psalm praises the good LORD for the accounts of redemption and deliverance of four groups of people in very difficult situations (4,10,17, 23). Today’s verses cover two of these stories.

First, the hungry, thirsty wanderers. These people wandered in the desert. Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. God led them to a place to settle and satisfied their thirst and hunger with good things.

Second, those in dark prisons. These people were in dark prisons due to their rebellion against God. They had bitter labor and stumbled with no one to help. But they also cried out to the LORD, and he saved them also. He brought them out of darkness and broke their chains.

The psalmist repeats: “Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind” (8,15,21,31). Indeed, we should thank the LORD for his unfailing love and wonderful deeds.

Prayer: Prayer: LORD God, great is your unfailing love and wonderful are your deeds of deliverance and salvation for all who cry out to you. May we each tell of your love and deliverance in our own lives and in the family of faith. In Jesus’ mighty name. Amen.

One Word: One Word: Tell of his unfailing love and deliverance
