The Riot in Ephesus

Date: Aug. 15, 2014

Passage

Acts 19:21-41 (ESV)

Daily Bread

Key Verse: 19:27

First, the precursor to the riot (21-27). As the word of God was growing and prevailing (20), the people in Asia began turning away from false gods to worship Jesus. Economically, this caused a problem for the craftsmen who made their livelihood off of making idols of the goddess Artemis. They were concerned that if this trend continued, their business would fall into contempt. Regardless of the reasons they gave, it shows that the devil will use anything to take people's hearts away from God.

Second, the riot (28-42). The craftsmen became enraged when they heard these things, and soon the entire city was in an uproar. Although most of the people did not know what was going on, they still joined in the throng anyway. Finally, cooler heads prevailed and the town clerk was able to dismiss the crowd. Once again, God's divine hand protected Paul and his companions.

Prayer: Lord, help us to stand for truth in an idolatrous world, and protect all those who risk their lives for the gospel.

One Word: Stand for the truth
