Jehoiada Restores the Covenant

First, Jehoiada works to restore God as King (1-11). Joash was rescued as a baby. Jehoiada knew God's people needed to turn back to God, not just get a new king on the throne. He patiently worked to build relationships among God's people. After Joash became seven, Jehoiada showed his strength. Making a covenant with the Levites and soldiers who were still loyal to the LORD, they anointed Joash as King. They were restoring God as King in the nation.
Second, renewal of the covenant (12-16).
After anointing Joash and dealing with Athaliah, Jehoiada then made a covenant that he, the people and the king would be the LORD's people. In sincerity to their covenant, they destroyed the temple of Baal. Orderly worship of God in the LORD's temple was restored. Their identity as the Lord's people was restored.
Prayer: Father, thank you for the privilege to be your covenant people. Please reign in my heart, my family and my nation as King, as we your people.
