Jehoiada's Good Influence on Joash

Date: Sep. 3, 2014

Passage

2 Chronicles 24:1-16 (ESV)

Daily Bread

Key Verse: 24:2

First, Jehoiada mentors young Joash (1-14).

Chapter 24 documents the reign of Joash: when he did what was right (1-16) and when he became wicked (17-27). The difference was the influence of his mentor, Jehoiada. As long as Jehoiada lived, Joash did what was right. He became zealous for the temple of the Lord. Under Athaliah, the people abandoned the Lord and his temple for Baal. The temple of the LORD represented the covenant of law with all the people. Joash helped the people give their hearts and money back to the Lord through rebuilding the temple using their offerings.

Second, Jehoiada honored by God and people (15-16). Jehoiada was not the king, but a priest. However, God honored him, giving him long life (130 years) and burial with the kings in the City of David. He was credited with all the good of Joash's reign.

Prayer: Father, thank you for the selfless love of godly mentors for your glory and the good of your people. Help me love you and mentor others for your glory.

One Word: God honors godly mentors
