Esther 9:1-19 (ESV)
Key Verse: 9:1
First, the tables are turned (9:1-10). On the very day they were to be annihilated, the Jews were permitted to attack their enemies. They did so, and won a great victory in every place. A fear of Mordecai came over everyone, and no one helped their enemies. Power did not corrupt Mordecai. Rather, he continued to shepherd God's people and fight against their enemies. God had given the victory. All they had to do was claim it. They killed their enemies, but they took no plunder. Haman's sons were hanged, meaning that all the vestiges of Haman's power were destroyed.
Second, a day of retribution (11-19). The issue of eradicating the enemies of the Jews was a national focus. Queen Esther reported an update directly to King Xerxes. She requested that another day be devoted to completely destroying their enemies and that Haman's 10 sons be a sign to those who dared to conspire against them in the future. Xerxes followed the queen's recommendation, and the Jews vanquished all their foes in the empire. God's salvation is sure and complete. We need to trust in him to rule and overrule.
Prayer: Lord, help me to trust in your sovereign rule over the affairs of men and be faithful to you. Thank you for rescuing me from evil and uplifting me.
One Word: God turned the tables around
