Passage
Zechariah 9:1-17 (ESV)
Date: Dec. 16, 2014
Zechariah 9:1-17 (ESV)
Key Verse: 9:9
First, those who are left will belong to God (1-8). Zechariah speaks of God's judgment against the Israelites' traditional enemies. Strongholds will be brought down. Pride will come to an end. No one will be able to turn back the LORD's wrath. But God's purpose is redemptive. A remnant will be joined with God's people (7). This vision looks to Jesus who bore the wrath for our sins. Those who receive Christ's forgiveness belong to God and are joined together as his people.
Second, the righteous, victorious and humble king (9-17). Jesus is the king who humbly rode on a donkey into Jerusalem. He did not come with armies and weapons but in humility and grace. His death and resurrection brings peace to the nations. His rule extends to the ends of the earth. He continues to shield his people in a hostile world and gives them victory (11). Jesus the Shepherd saves his flock. They are precious in his land.
Prayer: Lord, thank you for Jesus our humble king who saves us from our sins.
One Word: Rejoice! Your king comes to you.
