Genesis 1:26-31 (ESV)
Key Verse: 1:26
Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
First, Made in God's image (26-28). The final act of God on the sixth day was to make both man and woman in his own image. Mankind has some specific God-like attributes that other creatures do not have. Mankind is also capable of having a relationship with God. To be made in God's image was a great privilege and carries significant responsibility. Mankind was to rule over and subdue the earth, being a steward of God's world. He was also blessed to be fruitful in every way. This is the basic purpose of all mankind.
Second, It was very good (29-31). God also blessed mankind and every creature that has breath, with every seed-bearing plant and fruit trees for food. God provided for every need while man subdued the earth. With the creation of mankind, God completed his work. When God saw all that he had made and mankind occupying his rightful position, God declared it all very good.
Prayer: Lord, thank you for making us in your image. Help me to know you better and to do your work.
