Daily Bread

From Adam to Noah

Date: Jan. 13, 2015

Passage

Genesis 5:1-32  (ESV)

Daily Bread

Key Verse: 5:24

First, the likeness of God and Adam (1-17). God originally created mankind in his own image and likeness. Mankind was also originally sinless. But after Adam and Eve sinned, all mankind had a sinful nature that warred against God's image (Ro 7:23-24). Adam's children, like Seth, were in his image and likeness; that is, they inherited both God's nature and a sinful nature. God blessed Adam's descendants with long lives and many children but all of them were with sin.

Second, Enoch and Noah (18-32). The world had drifted away from God but there were some God-fearing people. Enoch is twice mentioned as one who walked faithfully with God. He, too, had a sinful nature but he sought God and had a relationship with him. He preached God's judgment against the ungodly (Jude 14-15). After 365 years, God took him away. A few generations later, Noah was born. Noah comforted his father who struggled to survive in a world cursed by God. Noah also walked with God (6:9).

Prayer: Lord, though I have a sinful nature, thank you for your image in me. Help me to seek you and walk faithfully with you.

One Word: Walk faithfully with God
