The Tower of Babel

Date: Jan. 20, 2015

Passage

Genesis 11:1-32  (ESV)

Daily Bread

Key Verse: 11:9

First, God opposes the proud (1-9). God wanted mankind to fill the earth after the flood (9:1). But as the population increased, people settled in one place, ignoring God's word. Using technological advances of the time, people tried to build a large city with a large tower that would reach the heavens. They wanted to assert their own sovereignty and push God out of human civilization. The LORD knew this. He came down, confused their language and scattered them over the earth. God scatters those who are proud in their inmost thoughts (Lk 1:51).

Second, Abram's genealogy (10-32). The flood had not cured man from sin and arrogance as seen at Babel. God had a different plan. Shem's and then Terah's family lines are traced until we come to Abram. God would begin a new history through Abram.

Prayer: Lord, please cleanse me from pride and help me to obey your word.

One Word: God opposes the proud
