Practical Trust in God's Provision

Date: Jan. 22, 2015

Passage

Genesis 12:10-13:18  (ESV)

Daily Bread

Key Verse: 13:15

First, a famine in Canaan (12:10-13:4). When a severe famine struck Canaan, Abram moved his family to Egypt. Abram was afraid the Egyptians would kill him for his beautiful wife Sarai. He told Sarai to lie about their relationship. The ruse seemed to work. Abram became wealthy and was on good terms with Pharaoh. But Abram also lost his wife and was in real danger of losing God's promise. Trying to resolve problems in our own way can lead to even bigger problems. But God graciously intervened and saved Abram and Sarai.

Second, Abram and Lot depart (13:5-18). Both Abram and Lot had become so wealthy that it caused family friction between them. Abram proposed that they separate. Worry over material things had previously led Abram to take some foolish actions. But Abram learned his lesson in Egypt. He valued his relationship with Lot ahead of worldly wealth. Lot chose the better land for himself with no regard for Abram. But God comforted Abram by promising that all of the land would one day be given to his descendants.

Prayer: Lord, help me to honor and trust you and to value relationships with others ahead of worldly wealth.
