God Gives Victory to Abram

Date: Jan. 23, 2015

Passage

Genesis 14:1-24  (ESV)

Daily Bread

Key Verse: 14:20

First, Abram rescues Lot (1-16). Abram lived in the midst of a complex system of political alliances. When one faction rebelled, war broke out. Abram became personally involved when his nephew Lot was taken as a prisoner of war. Despite their rocky parting, Abram held no grudges against Lot. Abram asked his Canaanite friends to help him rescue his nephew. With 318 trained men, Abram routed the allied armies of four powerful kings and rescued Lot. This was only possible by the help of God Almighty.

Second, Melchizedek's blessing (17-24). Upon returning from battle, Abram was met by two kings: Melchizedek, king of Salem, and the king of Sodom. . Melchizedek reminded Abram that God Most High had brought about this miraculous victory. Abram responded to this blessing with a tithe. The king of Sodom wanted to reward Abram with great material wealth. However, Abram refused. Abram wanted to be a clear example of what God can do for those who live by faith.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for giving us many victories. May your name be praised through my life.

One Word: Praise be to God Most High
