Geneology of Jesus, the Messiah

Date: Jan. 24, 2015

Passage

Matthew 1:1-17  (ESV)

Daily Bread

Introduction the Gospel of Matthew

Key Verse: 1:1

First, the people in Jesus' genealogy (1-16). God promised to bless all people through Abraham's seed, who is Christ. God promised to establish an eternal kingdom through David's line. He was faithful to keep these promises, fulfilling them in Jesus the Messiah. Matthew intentionally includes five women of faith (Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, Uriah's wife, Mary). Regardless of human distinctions, God can include anyone in his plan by his grace.

Second, Jesus, the culmination of history (17). Matthew divides Jesus' genealogy into three parts. The Patriarchs, from Abraham to David, where God revealed his promise and the life of faith. The Kings, from David to the Exile, where God revealed his kingdom and the importance of a shepherd king. God was with his people even in exile, finally revealing himself in Jesus the Messiah. Jesus is the focus and fulfillment of all of God's history.

Prayer: Father, thank you for Jesus our Messiah. Help me live by faith, trusting in your promises day by day.

One Word: God's history of grace
